D.C. theater scene is on the rise, according to survey

The stage is still a pull in the D.C. area.

theatreWashington, the force behind the Helen Hayes awards, annouced on Tuesday the results of their 2011 survey on local theater. According to the results, theater attendence was up in 2011, rising by 197,393 people from 2010, with shows bringing in a total of 2,261,509 audience members.

84 theaters in the area produced shows in 2011. Those organizations staged 9,903 performances of 805 productions.

“Despite a weaker economy and fears that the arts are losing funding, Washington theatre is resilient and even growing,” said Linda Levy Grossman, president and CEO of theatreWashington.
