ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) — The U.S. Navy is buying $100 million more fuel from Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin.

The plant in East Tennessee has been the supplier of fuel for the Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines since 1964.

The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/TLMmfa ) reported Thursday that the company announced it had received two contracts from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Naval Reactors Laboratory Field Office. The deals are for one year each and are effective in 2013.

Information about the contracts was limited, but the company said one of them provides for development of fuel for future Naval Reactor programs.

NFS President Joe Henry stated in a news release that the company also continues to convert highly enriched uranium from weapons into fuel for nuclear power plants.
