Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was asked to defend her decision to endorse Bernie Sanders, an “old white guy.”
The Democratic congresswoman, 30, granted Sanders, 78, her coveted endorsement at a rally in New York on Saturday.
In an interview that aired Monday on CBS This Morning, correspondent Nikole Killion asked Ocasio-Cortez, “As a woman of color, why back an old white guy? And is this the future of the party?”
The New York Democrat responded, “I’m actually very excited about this partnership because it shows what we have to do in our country, is that we have to come together across race, across gender, across generation.”
Ocasio-Cortez noted that she had met with Elizabeth Warren while considering her endorsement. She decided to endorse Sanders after he suffered a heart attack, calling the incident a “real gut check.”
“I think she’s a fabulous candidate,” Ocasio-Cortez said of Warren. “And so, frankly, Senator Sanders, Senator Warren, and myself are the same team in the party.”
Warren downplayed her disappointment regarding the endorsement, saying, “We have worked together, and I know that once this primary is over we’re all going to be on the same side.”
