CHICAGO (AP) — A judge has sentenced a 30-year-old suburban Chicago man to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child.

The Kane County circuit judge imposed the sentence Wednesday on Brandon M. Niford. The Aurora man was convicted earlier this year of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutors say Niford sexually abused the child between 2007 and 2010 when the victim was under 13 years old.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon praised the victim for her courage in coming forward. He says her willingness to testify — in the prosecutor’s words — “prevented Mr. Niford from preying on other children.”

Niford also must remain registered for life as a sex offender.
