Mescheriakov to leave Georgetown

The exodus continues from the Hilltop, with Nikita Mescheriakov becoming the latest Hoya to depart following the announcement Tuesday that he would transfer at the end of the semester.

He follows Vernon Macklin (transferred to Florida), Jeremiah Rivers (transferred to Indiana) and DaJuan Summers (left early to be 2nd round NBA draft pick), if we’re counting all the so-called surprises. Omar Wattad also bolted last spring for Chattanooga, but I have trouble remembering because he played even less than Mescheriakov.

After redshirting his freshman season, Mescheriakov started the final nine games last year. The best performance of his career came at Villanova, where he had 11 points on 4 for 5 shooting. Perhaps coming in second place was his solid one-minute showing in last January’s then-upset win over Syracuse, where he hit two 3-pointers and dove on the floor for a loose ball, a play in which Andy Rautins injured his knee and was lost for the rest of the game…

But despite being pegged as a 3-point specialist, Mescheriakov’s career average from behind the arc entering the year was just 26.2 percent. In fact, the other memory that sticks in my head was him hitting the side of the backboard on the final play of last year’s Big East Tournament loss to St. John’s.

This season, Mescherikov had most recently registered two DNPs before a token appearance in Saturday’s loss to Old Dominion.

Here’s the official word from Georgetown.
