WATCH LIVE: Pentagon holds briefing on situation in Afghanistan

The Pentagon will hold a press briefing about the situation in Afghanistan at 3 p.m. local time after two explosions detonated in the capital of Kabul on Thursday and killed dozens, including at least 11 U.S. Marines and a Navy medic.

The service members were among the dozens killed after twin explosions tore through the crowd congregating at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport and a hotel about 200 yards from the gate.

On Thursday morning, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the first explosion was the result of a “complex [suicide bomber improvised explosive device] attack” that resulted in a number of U.S. and civilian casualties.

Kirby also confirmed a second explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, which is close to the Abbey Gate.
