President Trump to headline GOP retreat

Donald Trump will headline the congressional Republican retreat in late January, which will be held just five days after he is sworn in as president.

Trump will attend along with his vice president, Mike Pence, GOP aides confirmed.

Republicans will meet in Philadelphia for a few days beginning Wednesday, Jan. 25. The retreat is aimed at giving House and Senate lawmakers a chance to plan their 2017 agenda, in particular how they will reform health care and the tax code.

Trump has held a few meetings with the GOP but Pence has mostly taken the lead on dealing directly with lawmakers.

Instead, Trump has wielded influence over the GOP congress with tweets and interviews about the agenda, including how Republicans should repeal and replace the healthcare law. It’s become common practice for presidents to attend party retreats.
