Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence said Wednesday he plans to to fight the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, a 1973 court decision that essentially legalized abortion-on-demand.
“I hope to live to see the day that we restore the sanctity of life back to the center of American law,” Pence told Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. “I’m pro-life and I don’t apologize for it. I truly do believe that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and again overturned more than a century of pro-life laws that had been enacted through the democratic process through all 50 states.”
The Indiana governor cited his beliefs as a Christian as the reason for his stance, though many non-Christian Republicans also endorse the same principles.
“I consider myself just a pretty ordinary Christian,” Pence said. “I try to spend a little time in prayer and in the book everyday and do my best to try to live it out in my own personal life.”
The GOP vice presidential nomination said while he believes marriage is meant to be between one man and one woman, the issue is one that ought to be left up to the states and not the highest court of the land.
Pence also took on the Left and mainstream media’s criticisms of his stance on gay marriage and abortion.
“I just try to let it roll off my back, it just comes with the territory,” Pence said. “I abhor the discrimination against anyone.”
Pence said a Trump administration would put forward policies that improve the security of both women and men, but gave no examples.
