Developers of a proposed $437 million resort and conference center in Linthicum are seeking the financial help of Anne Arundel.
Heffner & Weber Cos. and Asha Cos. are building four hotels, including shops, restaurants and an aquatic center, on West Nursery Road near Baltimore/Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport.
But to build the parking garage for the conference center, the developers need a $50 million bond from the county, said Mitchell Weber, president of Heffner & Weber.
Weber called the garage an “integral” part of the project, as the structure would provide parking for all the hotels and conference center, during a presentation to the County Council on Tuesday.
The bond, funded by tax revenue, would be repaid by the developers, and the county would retain ownership of the garage until the bond is paid off.
But county officials were concerned about funding a private project that could benefit the developers.
“We give you $50 million for a garage, and you may end up making some serious profit from it,” said Councilman Jamie Benoit, D-Crownsville.
Officials said they planned to discuss the management of the garage and the county’s involvement.
