Tuesday will mark the swearing in of the 114th Congress and there will be more African-American legislators than any other in Congress history.
The Congressional Black Caucus held its swearing in ceremony for its members Tuesday morning and for the 114th Congress there will be 48 total black legislators. Congress will have 44 African-Americans, two senators and two non-voting delegates, which will bring the number to 48.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Congressman Steny Hoyer, D-Md., delivered remarks at Tuesday’s ceremony. Both lawmakers touted the increased number of African-American women and that there will be seven ranking members serving on House committees in this Congress.
