A local politician who once claimed a prominent Jewish family controls the weather has covertly announced his plans to run for mayor of Washington, D.C.
Trayon White, who has represented the 8th Ward on Washington’s city council since 2016, quietly announced his mayoral run in the comments of an Instagram post.
“@trayonwhite needa be mayor,” one user commented on a Washingtonian Problems Instagram post, to which White replied, “I’m running.”
OPINION: DC’S EXTENDED CORONAVIRUS ‘EMERGENCY’ ISN’T ABOUT CORONAVIRUS AT ALL
In 2018, White posted a Facebook video accusing the Rothschilds, a prominent Jewish banking family often targeted by conspiratorial statements, of controlling the climate for profit.
“Y’all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation,” said Trayon while discussing a sudden series of flurries in the area. “And D.C. keeps talking about, ‘We a resilient city.’ And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.”
White also claimed that the Rothschilds controlled the federal government.
The city councilman later apologized for his remarks and visited with local Jewish leaders and scholars to discuss what he had gotten wrong. He also visited the National Holocaust Memorial Museum at the request of the Jewish Community Relations Council, only to leave halfway through his tour.
That same year, he donated a portion of his campaign funds to the Nation of Islam, a group whose leader, Louis Farrakhan, called Jewish people “termites” and said Adolph Hitler was “a very great man.”

Despite the controversies, White won 78.84% of the vote in 2020.
White joins a handful of others mounting primary challenges to incumbent Mayor Muriel Bowser, including at-large Councilmember Robert White (of no relation), pastor Michael Campbell, and Ward 5 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner James Butler.
