Judge gives in to Dems, extends NC voter registration

A judge has ordered North Carolina election officials to extend voter registration in 36 eastern counties, after Hurricane Matthew disrupted the final week of registering.

The North Carolina Democratic Party had sued the State Board of Elections in county court on Friday, the day of the current deadline for Tar Heel State voters to sign up. A hearing will be held next Wednesday to discuss a new cut-off date.

The Democratic Party had argued voters should have until next Wednesday to turn in their forms. Those who choose to vote early starting next Thursday will be able to register the day they show up at the polls.

Georgia and Florida also extended voter registration in response to the hurricane. The Florida Democratic Party had also sued for a one-day extension.
