Priest invited to pray at Democratic convention promises to mention protecting the unborn

Catholic priest Rev. James Martin promised to pray for the protection of the unborn at this year’s Democratic National Convention.

In a Tweet on Monday, Martin said, “I will be praying for a respect for the sanctity of all human life and for a nation in which all are welcome.”

When asked to clarify if he would be specifically mentioning protecting the unborn in his Thursday remarks, Martin responded to the Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy in the affirmative: “Yes.”

The priest, who is is controversial within the Catholic Church for his open attitude toward homosexuality, also said that if invited to attend the Republican National Convention, he will recite the same prayer.

In 2012, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, specifically prayed for unborn children at the Democratic convention.

“Grant us the courage to defend it, life, without which no other rights are secure,” he said. “We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected.”
