Rep. Jackie Speier, a Democrat from California, views the Democratic National Committee’s new lawsuit against the Trump campaign, Russia, and WikiLeaks as a “side-bar” that is “not in the interest of the American people.”
The lawsuit, filed Friday, alleges that the trio conspired to tip the scales of the 2016 election against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Speaking with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Speier, who endorsed Clinton in 2016, said she is “not very supportive” of the legal endeavor she described as an “ill-conceived idea.”
“I think we have a very serious criminal activity underway in this country by the Russians and possibly by those within the Trump campaign, and to make this political is actually the wrong thing to be doing,” she explained. “I’m not interested in a political tit-for-tat. I’m interested in getting to the truth, and if there is criminal conduct that has been engaged in, holding people accountable.”

Unlike Speier, Trump tweeted Friday that he sees the lawsuit as “good news” because it could mean he side could gain access to the DNC server, the emails from which were hacked and leaked by WikiLeaks during the summer of 2016. Members of the U.S. intelligence community concluded in January 2017 that WikiLeaks was being used by Russian intelligence.
Russian meddling in the 2016 election is currently being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller.
