Olney ballet leader weighs in on financial woes

Royal Dellinger, president of the Olney Ballet Theatre, says a fusion of county cash won’t save one of Montgomery County’s oldest theaters.

The Washington Examiner reported Thursday that the theater is facing more than $6 million in debt and is banking on $500,000 in county money and ramped up donations to keep the doors open.

“I think it’s a stopgap,” Dellinger said. “I’m really quite worried. It’s a mess. Frankly, they should go under.”

Dellinger added that more than a bad economy is to blame for Olney’s downfall, saying the theater took on too much debt even before the recession.
