Kyle Checchi is one of four Naval Academy midshipmen to win the Marshall Scholarship, which grants two years of postgraduate study in a United Kingdom university. Checchi, of San Ramon, Calif., is the top academic student at the academy, majoring in chemistry and winning the academy’s American Chemical Society Undergraduate Chemistry Award this past year.
Checchi is researching the chemical synthesis of antimicrobial compounds and is the brigade’s character adviser. He also volunteers at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. With the scholarship, Checchi plans to pursue a master’s in international health policy at the London School of Economics. He hopes one day to become a Navy doctor.
