$300 million more in corporate welfare WHO: The Department of Energy
WHAT: President Obama’s $814 billion stimulus included $300 million for the Energy Department to spend on grants for cities to buy alternative-fuel vehicles. The city of Orlando is buying Chevy Volts at $40,000 each.
WHY ITS AN OUTRAGE: A comparable gas-powered Ford Focus can be bought for just $16,000 and, when driven in the city, gets gas mileage almost identical to the Chevy Volt. Plus, even when the Volt runs on its electric motor, that electricity often is generated by coal-fired power plants.
WHERE TO VENT: Call the Department of Energy at 202-586-5000.
