Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse viewers speculate character is transgender

A week after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released in theaters, viewers are speculating as to whether a main character was revealed to be transgender.

Gwen Stacy, one of the many Spider-Man characters played by Hailey Steinfeld, was animated alongside transgender paraphernalia. A blue, white, and pink transgender flag hung in her room, her father in the film donned a similarly colored pin, and throughout the film, she is surrounded by pink and blue.

Director Justin K. Thompson confirmed that the colors around the character were intentional and meant to demonstrate her mood. Thompson said he created the theme out of inspiration from Disney’s Cinderella movie, which implemented the same tactic.

“The way color & texture affected my emotions when I was kid watching that scene in Cinderella felt real and personal to me. I’ve never been able to let it go,” Thompson tweeted. “Paying homage to that scene is a literal childhood dream come true.”

Neither Sony Pictures nor Marvel Comics responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for confirmation about the character.
