Pelosi challenger: Democrats ‘are not even a national party’

Rep. Tim Ryan, the Democratic challenger to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said Sunday that Democrats have ceased to represent most Americans.

“We’re not even a national party,” Ryan said during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “We’re a coastal party.”

The Ohio Democrat said the past few election cycles have proven there is “no energy” in the strategy of identity politics, or splitting voters up into groups based on race, gender and religion.

“I think you think the next election’s going to be different, and the next elections haven’t been different,” Ryan said. “The reality of it is, our message has been wrong.”

Ryan said his fellow House Democrats have grown angry with the direction of their party given their recent losses in all three branches of the federal government and across the country at the state level.

“The level of frustration in our caucus is as great as I’ve ever seen it,” Ryan said.
