AOC says Capitol siege nearly left ‘half of the House dying’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued railing against the riot that took place at the Capitol last week, saying half of the members of the House nearly died in the siege.

“And so, if we allow insurrection against the United States with impunity, with no accountability, we are inviting it to happen again,” the New York Democrat said on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. “We came close to nearly half of the House dying on Wednesday.”

Five people died during the storming of the Capitol, including an Air Force veteran who was shot by police.

During the interview, Stephanopoulos read a letter from Republican lawmakers to President-elect Joe Biden in which they condemned actions to impeach President Trump.

Ocasio-Cortez slammed the letter and said last Wednesday’s events were an “insurrection against the United States.”

Democrats have remained steadfast in their efforts to impeach Trump, saying his rhetoric incited Wednesday’s violence. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter on Sunday evening to colleagues that the president is “an imminent threat” to democracy.

“In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both,” Pelosi wrote. “The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”
