‘It was chilling’: Bill Maher laments Trump’s ‘best week ever’ as president

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher is feeling blue after President Trump had a good news week.

The liberal host of Real Time on HBO told CNN on Sunday that the last seven days increased Trump’s chances of being reelected in November.

“I thought it was his best week ever, and the most depressing week for me, as someone who is not a fan of Donald Trump and what he’s doing to this country,” Maher said. “It was chilling.”

On Monday, a technical snafu led to chaos in the Democratic Iowa caucuses, roiling the first-in-the-nation contest in the 2020 primary.

Trump delivered a State of the Union address on Tuesday night that rallied his base of supporters, and the following day, he was acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate on two impeachment charges. On Friday came a stronger-than-expected jobs report.

“Anything you see enough becomes normal,” Maher said. “You don’t notice it. So, he’s in a great position. The bad is baked into the cake. His fans either love it because it’s trolling or it’s just him, and lots of other people are like, yeah, I know that’s him, but you know, we all know crazy people in our life.”

After being acquitted by the Senate, Trump trolled his political rivals by sharing a video on Twitter about how “Trumpism” will be an election-time force to reckon with for decades to come.

“I don’t know how we get to the end of the movie,” Maher said, later continuing, “I don’t know how we get from here, this week, to that place Nov. 3rd where he’s defeated and leaves, which, of course, I don’t think he’s gonna do.”
