CNN’s Democracy in Peril appears to be the network’s latest effort to save its plummeting ratings with Jim Acosta as host up against Fox’s Hannity at 9 p.m. E.T.
Between Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, Fox News is consistently winning the ratings in every time slot. It is sweeping the coveted 25-54 age demographic. On Friday, Fox News’s Hannity drew in nearly 2.6 million total viewers in comparison to Democracy in Peril’s 593,000.
Dan Froomkin with Press Watch touted CNN’s new show but admitted it garnished little fanfare.
“The most essential, important show on cable launched last week, but with so little fanfare you probably don’t even know about it,” Froomkin wrote. “For me, it’s literally a wish come true.”
During the CNN show Monday night, Acosta blasted Trump, calling him a dictator and threat to American democracy. He also tackled the threat of misinformation — a topic that its Fox News counterpart regularly discusses, albeit with a different culprit as blame.
“It’s about holding on to this incredible democracy that we’ve been taking for granted — free elections, free press, freedom to tune out the lies,” Acosta said. “Our democracy may be in peril, but it’s not finished. Yes, we need to defend this democracy. It’s only as strong as those who are willing to protect it. But if you ask me, I think it’s time to go on offense. And going on offense includes combating one of the greatest enemies to democracy, misinformation.”

Chris Cuomo, the brother of former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, previously hosted a 9 p.m. ET show on CNN until the network fired him in December.
CNN began airing Democracy in Peril last week with Brianna Keilar. The show said its goal is to cover and expose efforts to weaken America’s democratic system.
