Retired cop says he was assaulted for wearing ‘Make Fifty Great Again’ birthday hat

A retired New York City police officer claims he was assaulted when a woman mistook the hat he was wearing for a “Make America Great Again” cap.

Daniel Sprague, who was celebrating his birthday at a Tennessee bar last week with his wife, was sporting a red hat that read, “Make Fifty Great Again,” when a woman allegedly approached him and swung him around before punching him in the face. In addition to the hat, he was also wearing a shirt that said, “Making America Great since 1970.”

NYC Council member Joe Borelli, a friend of the former law enforcement officer, posted a photo of Sprague wearing the hat, which was a birthday gift, in the aftermath of the attack. In it, he can be seen with a bruise on his upper cheek and blood running down his face.

“I would assume that she had, you know, a ring or she maybe even had a set of keys or something to get it, because it is pretty deep and it goes to the bone,” Sprague said.

Sprague filed a report with the police, and he plans on pressing charges if they arrest the perpetrator.
