Ilhan Omar faces backlash for response to Ivanka Trump pro-family coronavirus message

Rep. Ilhan Omar took some heat for her response to Ivanka Trump’s tweet about spending time with her family during the coronavirus outbreak.

The first daughter tweeted Tuesday, “Staying home today w/ kids? Plan living room camp out! Throw a bedsheet over some taped together brooms. Plan a menu & ‘pack’ sandwiches, salads.”

She continued, “A fun activity that also brings family together for a meal,” accompanied by a picture of her with her kids.

The Minnesota Democrat reacted to the tweet by saying, “Thinking of all the families separated forcefully by your father’s policies today.”

Several Twitter users attacked Omar for the response, arguing it wasn’t helpful during a time of crisis.

“You would think in all that is going on in the entire world, you would say something to bring our country together. Instead you remain hateful and tired and just pitiful. You had an opportunity to help instead you’re condemning. There’s no place for you here,” one user wrote.

One user asked Omar: “Why do you need to be so hateful? Ivanka shared a simple family suggestion and you had to be spiteful and mean. Not something a true leader would do. Awful. I’m praying for this country to heal in all ways. You should try it.”

Others saw the irony in her drawing attention to family separation, given her recent marriage to a man with whom she allegedly had an affair.

Some flipped her immigration stances around on her.

“Now? During the crisis? Free immigration now?” another wrote. “Open borders? You’ve displayed your opportunistic political virtue signaling, lack of patriotism and blatant hypocrisy once again.”

Others took jabs by alluding to the speculation she previously married her brother to help him gain legal citizenship.

Confirmed coronavirus cases around the world broke 200,000 on Wednesday, with the United States seeing more than 6,500 cases.
