Police investigating attacks against Orthodox Jews in New York and New Jersey

Police are investigating after three Hasidic Jews were violently mugged in Brooklyn and the tires of more than a hundred cars belonging to Orthodox Jews were slashed in New Jersey.

The three Hasidic Jews were attacked Monday. The muggings occurred within an hour of one another, and police said that the attackers punched the victims in the face and rifled through their pockets. Two of the men reportedly suffered major trauma but are expected to recover.

The New York Police Department’s hate crimes unit is investigating the incident. Police believe the attackers to be three teenage boys.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said that additional police would be patrolling the area where the attacks took place.

“The NYPD is investigating these vicious attacks and our Hate Crimes division is on the scene. We’ll be adding additional personnel to patrol the area and keep things safe. If you have any information or were a victim of these attacks, please contact 800-577-TIPS right away,” de Blasio tweeted.

In neighboring New Jersey, police are also investigating crimes committed against Orthodox Jews. More than 100 tires have been slashed in recent days and police said that all of the vehicles targeted were driven by Jews.

The slashings took place outside of homes in the predominately Orthodox Jewish community of Lakewood Township, New Jersey. The town is home to one of the world’s largest yeshivas.
