Four U.S. Marines are presumed to have perished in the crash of a CH-53E helicopter during a routine training mission in southern California, near the border with Mexico.
The “Super Stallion” helicopter went down at about 2:35 p.m. Tuesday in the vicinity of El Centro, California, according to a statement from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
“Four crew members were aboard the aircraft,” the statement said. “The status of all four is presumed dead pending positive identification.”
No cause was given for the crash, which is under investigation.
As is military policy, the names of the crew won’t be released until all next-of-kin have been notified.
