Clinton: Anti-worker Trump has hired ‘union-busting firms’

Hillary Clinton attacked Donald Trump as anti-worker Monday as she made the case to members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) that she would be a better advocate for the working class in the White House.

“Trump economics are a recipe for low wages, fewer jobs, more debt. He could bankrupt America like he’s bankrupted his companies,” Clinton said to hundreds of union workers gathered in Detroit at the SEIU on Monday. “Ask yourself: How could anybody lose money running a casino? I mean really?”

Trump has made white, blue-collar voters central to his appeal during the 2016 campaign. But the Clinton campaign has made it clear that these voters are their next targets.

As Clinton spoke in Detroit, her campaign tweeted another attack against the GOP nominee, saying, “Donald Trump thinks Americans are being paid too much and has hired union-busting firms to break up organizing campaigns on his properties.”

During her speech, the likely Democratic nominee emphasized policies such as living wages for all workers, paid family leave, expanded healthcare and affordable childcare. She also hit Trump for his opposition to increasing the minimum wage, claiming the presumptive Republican nominee must “open his ears and listen to what working people everywhere are saying: that America needs a raise.”

Clinton also sought to unite the Democratic Party and appeal to union workers who are Bernie Sanders supporters. While the majority of Sanders supporters say they would back Clinton in a general election, some 25 percent of Sanders supporting Democrats say they wouldn’t. Furthermore, Sanders and his supporters are angry with the Democratic establishment, arguing the party leadership favors Clinton.

“We are coming to the end of the Democratic primaries. I applaud Sen. Sanders and his supporters for challenging us,” Clinton said. “We are going to get money out of politics, we are going to take on the crisis of income inequality and we are going to unify the Democratic Party and stop Donald Trump.”
