Hunter Biden investigation: White House defends ‘independence’ of DOJ after IRS whistleblower letter

The White House is dismissing allegations by a whistleblower that the investigation into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, is infected with “politics” and “preferential treatment.”

The White House maintained that Biden is upholding his commitment of having the investigation be conducted “free from any political interference” in a statement Thursday.

HUNTER BIDEN INVESTIGATION INFECTED BY ‘POLITICS’ AND ‘PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT’: IRS WHISTLEBLOWER

“Since he took office and consistent with his campaign promise that he would restore the independence of the Justice Department when it comes to decision-making in criminal investigations, President Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department, under the leadership of a U.S. attorney appointed by former President Trump, free from any political interference by the White House. He has upheld that commitment,” White House spokesman Ian Sams said.

The whistleblower, who claims to be a career IRS criminal supervisory special agent, made the claims in a letter sent by his lawyers to the heads of several House and Senate committees on Wednesday. In the letter, lawyers say the unnamed IRS official is seeking whistleblower protections.

The unknown individual claims to have disclosures which “contradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee” and “involve failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case.”

The White House has long maintained independence from the investigation of Hunter Biden, which has been handled by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump appointee, since 2021.

Last year, then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki defended the president, saying that he had “never had a conversation” with DOJ about investigations into his family members.

The president’s son is under investigation for various crimes, but reports suggest the federal investigation is focused on alleged tax fraud in 2016 and 2017 and lying on a federal firearm purchasing form for a handgun in 2018.

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said Wednesday it is “deeply concerning that the Biden administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations.”

Republicans in the House of Representatives have been examining the Biden family, including Hunter, regarding their overseas business dealings.
