House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy said President Trump should sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller if he has “nothing to hide.”
“Most of the so-called legal experts are telling him not to do it,” Gowdy, R-S.C., told CNN of Trump meeting with Mueller for an interview. “If you have nothing to hide, sit down—assuming a fair prosecutor, and I think Mueller is—sit down and tell him what you know.”

Gowdy’s remarks come after the Washington Post reported Mueller told Trump’s legal team the president is still being investigated as part of the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Mueller, however, does not consider Trump a criminal target.
But the special counsel is reportedly drafting a report about Trump’s conduct since he assumed the presidency and potential obstruction of justice.
Mueller reportedly spoke to Trump’s lawyers about the need to interview the president.
Trump’s legal team has been negotiating the terms of a potential interview, and Trump said last month he “would like to” sit down with the special counsel.
Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said Wednesday he believes Trump is “uniquely well-positioned” to answer questions Mueller and the American people have.
“I would tell you, if you did not rob the bank, there is no reason for you not to sit down and talk to the FBI about the bank robbery. So only he knows what he knows,” he said. “He’s been adamant that his campaign did not collude with anyone, including other segments of his campaign to get out the vote in certain states, so if you’ve done nothing wrong…”
