Democratic challenger fundraising off Ted Cruz's Time essay about Trump

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger in the 2018 midterm election said the Republican’s fawning comments about President Trump in Time Magazine do not represent their state and is now fundraising off it.

“Just read Time Magazine’s Most Influential People article for Donald Trump. The junior senator from Texas, Ted Cruz, is the author,” Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, said in an email to supporters on Thursday. “In it, he refers to the man who attacked his family — and the administration that has undermined so much of the decency and dignity of public life — as “great fun to watch.”

“I don’t think that comment represents Texas,” he added.

Cruz’s praise of Trump was published as part of the Time 100 list of most influential people page. Cruz, who during the 2016 presidential election called Trump a “sniveling coward” after Trump made derogatory comments about his wife, offered positive remarks on Trump explaining why Trump deserved to be included on the list.

“President Trump is doing what he was elected to do: disrupt the status quo,” Cruz wrote. “That scares the heck out of those who have controlled Washington for decades, but for millions of Americans, their confusion is great fun to watch.”

Cruz and O’Rourke will face each other in the 2018 midterm election in November.
