Marilyn Monroe’s iconic crystal dress is reportedly damaged after reality star Kim Kardashian wore it to the Met Gala.

Collector Scott Fortner shared before and after photos of the dress, showing stretched fabric and missing crystals. Kardashian only sported the dress for photos on the red carpet, opting for a replica the remainder of the night.

Monroe’s dress comes from her famous, sultry performance of “Happy Birthday” in celebration of President John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday in May 1962. The actress was 36 at the time, and somewhere between a six to eight dress size. Monroe died some three months later.

“Without question, the damage is significant,” Fortner said of the “irreparable” damage in one of many posts regarding the dress.

The dress was originally sketched out by designer Bob Mackie while he was working for Jean Louis, who customized the dress specifically for Monroe. It was eventually purchased by Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum for $4.8 million and kept in a temperature-controlled, dark vault. Monroe originally bought the custom dress for $1,440.

MONROE”This dress is a piece of my life and my heart. To see what [Kardashian] did in the damaging of it is heartbreaking,” photographer Chad Michael Christian Morrisette wrote in an Instagram post.

Kardashian promised leading up to the Met Gala that she would be “extremely respectful” with the gown.

“I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it and I won’t be wearing the kind of body makeup I usually do,” Kardashian said.

At 41, Kardashian also faced a negative reaction online when she shared on the red carpet that she had to drop 16 pounds in order to fit in the dress.

“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein,” Kardashian said. “I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.”
