People living in the town of Evanston, Illinois, have only a few days left to apply for a program that will give them $500 every month for an entire year.

The Guaranteed Income Pilot Program, which is accepting applications until Monday, will select 150 applicants from a lottery system and give them $500 loaded onto a prepaid debit card for 12 months. The program will then begin shortly after the deadline, according to a news release from the city.

“Evanston is proud to join the growing Guaranteed Income movement,” said Mayor Daniel Biss. “These programs provide assistance with no strings attached, giving recipients the ability to spend the funds in the way that makes the most sense for them and their families.”

The program is being funded by $700,000 given to the town in the 2021 American Rescue Plan, and Northwestern University and Evanston Community Foundation are also serving as partners in funding the program.

To be eligible for the program, an applicant must live in Evanston in a household with an income at or below 250% of the federal poverty line. In addition, applicants must be between 18 and 24 years old, 62 years old or older, or illegal immigrants.
