The White House tamped down the speculation surrounding vaccine passports Friday, reiterating past opposition to a federal mandate requiring people to obtain one.
“We haven’t moved on our stance on this,” principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated while gaggling with reporters on Air Force One. “There will be no federal vaccination database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential.”

The question was prompted by comments that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made earlier in the day about how the administration was considering vaccine passport candidates for future international travel.
“We’re taking a very close look at that,” Mayorkas said during an interview on ABC. “One of our principles that has guided us throughout this pandemic is the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion and making sure that any passport that we provide for vaccinations is accessible to all and that no one is disenfranchised.”
Pressed during her gaggle on what exactly Mayorkas meant, Jean-Pierre explained that “the U.S. government recognizes that other countries have or may have foreign entry requirements.”
“We will be monitoring these and helping all U.S. travelers meet those,” she continued, “but there will be no federal mandate requiring anyone to obtain a single vaccination credential.”
