Sign refusing ‘service to white people’ at Missouri Popeyes likely a prank: Police

A fast-food restaurant sign that refused “service to white people” was likely a prank, police said.

The words were seen taped to a drive-thru box at a Popeyes restaurant in Lake St. Louis, Missouri.

“Effective 6-1-21 this restaurant is under new management and will reserve the right to refuse service to white people,” the sign read. “We apologize for any inconvenience. Signed, general manager, Mason.”

Based on surveillance video, it’s likely someone other than a Popeyes employee affixed the sign, Lt. Pat Doering told KMOV, adding the mishap appeared to be a prank.

Backlash ensued after the message spread on social media, and the restaurant closed its door temporarily following threats. Residents in the area flocked to view the sign firsthand.

“I came up to verify it for myself,” one resident said. “When I went to the drive-thru, you could see where the sign had been ripped off from the duct tape.”
