Not a happy new year for the Wizards

And most of us thought the Wizards’ problems were only on the court. Now reports have surfaced from The New York Post and Yahoo! Sports that the Gilbert Arenas gun investigation is linked to a locker room showdown with teammate Javaris Crittenton.

In fact, only a short time ago, Arenas himself tweeted (@gilbertarenas): “i wake up this morning and seen i was the new JOHN WAYNE..lmao media is too funny”

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. To recap: On Christmas Eve, CBSSports.com broke the news of an investigation focused on Arenas and alleged weapons possession inside Verizon Center. The Wizards responded, as did Arenas himself. Details here.

On Tuesday, before the Wizards’ first home game since news of the investigation had surfaced, it was reported by The Washington Post that the D.C. police had gotten involved. After the game, Arenas fearlessly fielded questions about the investigation, although the Wizards PR staff tried in vain to prevent him from doing so. His comments can be found here.

The Wizards emailed this statement just before 1 p.m.: “The Washington Wizards take this situation and the ongoing investigation very seriously. We are continuing to cooperate fully with the proper authorities and the NBA and will have no further comment at this time.”

And now most of us are trying to figure out if this is just some New Year’s celebration hangover-induced hallucination. If it’s not, Arenas and Crittenton could both be facing fines and suspensions.

Yahoo! also pointed out that the entire roster is on the trading block.
