French first lady: Melania Trump ‘much more constrained than I am’

First lady Melania Trump’s life might not be as glamorous as it seems from the outside, according to French first lady Brigitte Macron.

Macron told Le Monde, later translated by The Guardian, that she genuinely enjoyed her time with her U.S. counterpart during her visit to Washington this week with husband President Emmanuel Macron.

“[Melania was] actually really fun. We have the same sense of humor. We laugh a lot together,” Brigitte Macron explained, while adding that she doesn’t envy her counterpart’s lifestyle in the White House.

According to the French first lady, Melania “cannot do anything” which might explain her solemn appearance in public.

“She can’t even open a window at the White House. She can’t go outside. She’s much more constrained than I am. I go out every day in Paris,” Macron said.

Comparing their similar roles, Brigitte Macron said the U.S. first lady is under a microscope at all times and rarely gets the chance to “live a normal life.” That contrasts with the less-intense amount of scrutiny the French first lady says she attracts.

During their three-day visit to Washington, D.C., the Macrons partook in a number of activities with the Trumps, including a state dinner at the White House.
