President Trump congratulated former Labor Secretary Tom Perez on becoming the new leader of the Democratic National Committee, saying his selection will be good — for Republicans.
“Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC. I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!” Trump tweeted.

Perez defeated Rep. Keith Ellison on the second ballot in Atlanta earlier on Saturday. Ellison was the early front-runner and favorite of the progressive/Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party, while Perez was championed by some of the Obama administration’s highest officials, like Vice President Joe Biden.
Trump didn’t weigh in much on the DNC race aside from chiming in to say that Ellison knew he would be the Republican nominee way before anyone else did.
Perez shot back later on Saturday, promising to be Trump’s worst nightmare.
Call me Tom. And don’t get too happy. @keithellison and I, and Democrats united across the country, will be your worst nightmare. https://t.co/fu7WvLofrD
