Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach found in contempt of court

A federal judge has found Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach in contempt of court for failing to obey a previous order from the judge on a voter registration case.

Judge Julie Robinson ruled Wednesday evening that Kobach, a Republican, had not followed her instruction to mail postcards to Kansas voters to whom she had reinstated voting rights after he tried to implement a proof-of-citizenship requirement during the 2016 election.

“Kansans have come to expect these postcards to confirm their registration status, and Defendant ensured the Court on the record that they had been sent prior to the 2016 general election,” Robinson wrote in her ruling, according to a report.

“They were not, and the fact that he sent a different notice to those voters does not wholly remove the contempt, nor does his attempt to resend postcards eighteen months after the election and five months after Plaintiffs notified him of the issue,” she added.

Kobach will have to pay the American Civil Liberties Union attorney fees for last month’s case. He had served as leader of President Trump’s now-defunct voter fraud commission.

Robinson said additional restitution will be announced when she rules on the case.
