A 60-year-old Florida man said he acted fast and killed a man wielding an AK-47 who tried to rob him of his jewelry.
Donovan Stewart told CBS Miami that he, his girlfriend, and his 11-year-old son were in their van when the Monday morning intrusion occurred.
“The guy I killed last night, he put an AK-47 to my damn face,” Stewart said.
Stewart said the thief opened the door to the van he was in and pointed the rifle at him. Reacting quickly, Stewart reached behind him, grabbed his handgun, and shot the man.
“I am from Kingston town in Jamaica,” Stewart said, “and I am not going to go out like a punk, so I emptied my Glock in his chest. This man tried to get in my van while I was sleeping, and he was surprised to see what I did.”
“You know I have a security license, I have a G license, and I have a state firearms license and a concealed weapons permit and I have a gun and I am a member of the NRA,” he said. “My family is innocent, and just don’t put an AK-47 in my face. I will not allow that to happen.”
Stewart said the man had robbed others, including a woman, at gunpoint.
“You want to come looking for trouble?” Stewart said. “Come to me. Come to me. I wouldn’t do anything like this to anybody, and they picked the wrong person in this case.”
Miami police officer Mike Vega said the shooting appeared to be in self-defense but said that an investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Police are working to confirm whether the man had robbed other people.
“Everyone is cooperating,” Vega said, “but we still need to receive more information. We need to put this all together and determine what happened.”
