CARMEL, Ind. — Donald Trump slammed Ted Cruz for not helping his running mate when she slipped onstage Monday.
Fiorina introduced the Texas senator and his wife at a rally and then proceeded to stumble onstage as she stepped aside to make room. Cruz did not appear to notice as he trailed his wife and shook hands with supporters who lined the stage, a few feet away from Fiorina.
“Even I would have helped her. No, it’s true,” Trump said as the crowd roared. “They showed it to me and I said, ‘Wow, that’s really cruel.’ She fell off, she just went down. She went down a long way, right?'”
Trump went on to call it a “weird deal” and belittled Cruz for picking a running mate while being mathematically eliminated from earning the delegates necessary to win the Republican nomination before the GOP convention begins this summer.
Trump avoided criticizing Fiorina directly, and chose instead to slam his opponent. While Cruz may have selected Fiorina in part to spotlight Trump’s controversial statements about women, Trump’s barb appeared aimed at turning the issue around on Cruz to make the senator’s interaction with women an issue on the campaign trail.
Republicans will vote in Indiana’s primary on Tuesday.
