MSNBC host Joe Scarborough declared on his program Wednesday that it is impossible to be both a conservative and a supporter of President Trump.
“They look at [Andrew] Cuomo, and they’re like, ‘God, there’s a leader,’” Scarborough said of “lifelong Republicans” who are watching the way Trump has acted during the nationwide outbreak of the coronavirus.
The president is “damaging his political standing” with “clownish behavior” during daily press conferences, Scarborough said.
“And that’s, by the way, conservatives — well, not conservatives,” he said. “You can’t be conservative and support Donald Trump. Trumpists are even saying that now.”
Scarborough has recently spent a large portion of his program each morning critiquing Trump’s statements during the conferences with reporters. Scarborough on occasion looks into the camera and directly addresses Trump, who sometimes watches and tweets about Scarborough’s opinions about him.
“These press conferences, Donald, Mr. President, these press conferences are bad for America,” he said Wednesday. “They just are. But also, they’re bad, actually, for your political standing.”
Trump, Scarborough said, sounds more like a dictator than a president.
“He goes out there and he’s scaring the hell out of voters every day by what he’s doing,” Scarborough said. “He sounded like Mussolini by saying, ‘The power of the president is complete, and I have complete, total authority.'”
