WHEELING, Ill. (AP) — An on-duty officer in a squad car has struck and killed a 20-year-old pedestrian in a northwestern Chicago suburb, Wheeling police said.

The officer hit the man with his SUV early Sunday, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The man’s family identified him to WLS-TV as Fredi Morales of Des Plaines. Police haven’t confirmed his name or details.

Police told the family he was wandering near the road when he was hit, Morales’ cousin Yoseline Martinez said. The family doesn’t believe that’s the full story and wants more details, she said.

Wheeling police were unavailable for comment Sunday, WLS-TV reported.

The Lake County Major Accidents Team is investigating.
