Swalwell says Democrats are ‘The Avengers’ heroes and GOP is ‘Hunger Games’

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Democratic presidential candidate Eric Swalwell compared Democrats to characters from “The Avengers” comic book and Republicans to participants in the kill-or-be-killed “Hunger Games” series.

“To my fellow candidates, I consider us all a part of being ‘The Avengers.’ The Republicans in 2016, that was ‘The Hunger Games.’ We are in this, and with your help and support, to save this country we love so much,” the California congressman said at the start of his speech at the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame Forum on Sunday.

Swalwell received 0% support in the latest CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll of likely Iowa Democratic caucus-goers.

Swalwell, 38, touted the fact that he was born in Iowa in hopes of connecting with the audience.

“We need a president who lives like you live,” Swalwell said. “I will be that president because I have lived that struggle and I know how hard you worked and what you expect it to add up to, but I will always be real with you. I will be bold without the bull.” His applause line met with no applause.

Swalwell also talked about his proposal to ban and buy back 15 million assault weapons.
