Ryan: ‘We don’t bend the rules based on the wins of the day’

House Speaker Paul Ryan reiterated that the rules of the Republican National Convention will not change regardless of whether a candidate fails to reach the delegate threshold.

“We are a country based upon a very important principle: the rule of law,” the Wisconsin Republican told CNN host Alisyn Camerota when told that exit polls showed voters believe whichever candidate is closest to the 1,237 delegate threshold should be the party nominee.

“And that means we don’t bend the rules based on the wins of the day, we play the rules by the rules. We follow the rules,” Ryan said. “And so that is how our party is organized, that is how a convention will be structured, and we will stick to the rules.”

Ryan said the GOP will not bend the rules “for anybody.”

“Think of how chaotic society is if you have laws and rules that you don’t live or follow by — I would argue that’s one of the problems we have in America today — and so we’re not going to bend the rules for anybody. We’re going to follow the rules as the rules are written,” Ryan, who is also the chairman of the Republican National Convention, pressed.

Ryan has said the party will follow the rules of the convention come July.

Some have argued that even if Donald Trump doesn’t reach the delegate threshold, if he has around 1,100 delegates, he should be the party nominee.
