Intercept journalist Glenn Greenwald speculated Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin might have some sort of dirt on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after she abruptly shut the door on impeaching President Trump.
In a series of tweets, Greenwald also questioned the motives of the Democratic Party, members of which have long questioned whether Trump has been compromised by the Russians over the course of Russia collusion investigations by special counsel Robert Mueller and congressional panels.
“If Trump is literally controlled by Putin to the point where Trump is forced to act in the best interests of Russia *at the expense of the US* – which has been the prevailing claim not of Dem fringes but its mainstream – how can it be morally justified not to impeach him???” he said. “Obama’s CIA Director, @JohnBrennan, proclaimed Trump guilty not just of ordinary crimes but *treason,* the penalty for which is death. There was barely any dissent from Dems. How can anyone justify Pelosi’s desire to leave a *traitor* in power for 2 years?”
He added: “Is it possible that Putin has something on Pelosi?”

Greenwald, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who broke the story of U.S. mass surveillance aided by former Central Intelligence Agency analyst Edward Snowden, has been highly critical of Russia investigation coverage and the Democrats’ role in fueling it.
He further questioned if there was some sort of misinformation campaign about Trump’s ties to Russia between the Democrats and the media.
“Perhaps Democratic politicians & their media allies have been knowingly feeding the party base & cable viewers unadulterated, deranged, unhinged buillshit that they now can’t carry through on with the power in their hands because it was all self-serving, manipulative dreck?” he said. “Anyone who has ever believed Trump is controlled & blackmailed by Putin to the point that Putin makes Trump treasonously sacrifice America’s interests for Russia’s – and there are a lot of you – should be marching in fury in the streets over Pelosi’s refusal to impeach Trump.”
Pelosi, who previously urged caution against impeachment chatter that permeated her caucus, came out forcefully against it in an interview published Monday.
“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told the Washington Post. “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”
