USDA: Rain, cold hampering Illinois corn harvest

Published

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wet, cool conditions across much of Illinois have slowed the state’s corn harvesting to a creep, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on the heels of its forecast of a record year for production of the grain and soybeans.

Illinois corn growers through Sunday had only managed to harvest 2 percent of their crop, down 12 percentage points from the average of the previous five years, the USDA said in its weekly crop progress report Monday. Last year at this time, just 1 percent of the crop was reaped.
