PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Emergency crews rescued a 12-year-old girl Friday after she fell through a grate and became trapped in a 10-foot hole outside a school in northeastern Illinois.

The girl was running laps near a retention pond during a gym class at Ira Jones Middle School in Plainfield, about 35 miles southwest of Chicago, when a grate she ran over gave way.

She fell and became trapped in a deep hole that had more than 2 feet of water inside, WLS-TV reported (http://abc7.ws/1BUekvO ).

Emergency crews rescued the girl, and she was taken to a hospital to be checked out for a possible injury to her hand, said Plainfield Deputy Fired Chief John Stratton.

She’s expected to OK, he said.

Workers are inspecting other grates around the retention pond.
