Nancy Pelosi fundraises off of spat with Trump over border wall

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California is fundraising off her spat with President Trump in the Oval Office this week over funding for a border wall.

In an email to supporters Thursday, Pelosi said she would triple-match all donations starting as low as $1 to renew Democratic membership for 2019.

“I’m fighting back with a vengeance — and personally triple-matching all Democratic membership renewals until midnight to make sure we stop him and his Republicans’ disastrous shutdown,” Pelosi said in the email.

Pelosi, along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, engaged in a heated debate with Trump on Tuesday as the Democrats warned Trump his request to fund a border wall as part of a massive spending bill would lead to a government shutdown.

“Averting a shutdown is so critical, I’ll personally triple-match your contribution,” Pelosi said in the fundraising email.

Although Trump has repeatedly called for $5 billion to go toward a border wall, Democratic lawmakers have remained firm that he will receive no more than $1.6 billion in funding for the project.

Toward the end of the meeting, Trump claimed he would be “proud” if a goverment shutdown ensued, during an exchange for border security funding.

“We need border security. That is what we are talking about, border security,” Trump said. “I am proud to shut down the government for border security.”
