The co-hosts of The View see something suspicious in President Trump sending well-wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell.
Host Meghan McCain said she believes Trump delivered an “informative” coronavirus briefing on Tuesday but noted that it was overshadowed by his nod to Maxwell after being asked by a reporter about his view of her arrest on federal charges for conspiring with the late Jeffrey Epstein to abuse underage children sexually.
“It completely blew up any conversation we’re having about the coronavirus. … This is my constant problem with him and this administration. Even when he tries, he steps on his messaging so egregiously that it was the only thing I was talking about afterward was this weird comment about this woman who is accused of being a pedophile sex trafficking person with Jeffrey Epstein,” McCain said.
McCain said she is “not a conspiracy theorist,” but that she found his comments about Maxwell to be suspicious because Trump had previously distanced himself from Epstein.
“What is going on that you have something nice to say about this person who’s being accused of some of the most egregious crimes that a human being can be accused of? And there’s a lot of conspiracy theories with Epstein and her and their power connection. It’s the first time I ever thought, ‘Wait. What is your connection to her?’ Which I always thought up until this point was nothing,” she said. “It’s just bizarre.”
“How hard is it to say, ‘She’s an alleged pedophile pervert, I hope she rots in jail,’ if that’s accurate? It’s not that hard,” McCain later added.
Host Sunny Hostin, who is also a lawyer, said Trump’s well-wishes may have been a “tell” to Maxwell if she had some compromising information about the president.
“He does have the power to pardon, you know, Ghislaine Maxwell because she has been — I believe she’s been charged with six counts for her alleged involvement with Epstein’s sexual abuse case. She’s being held without bail at this point. She has pled not guilty, of course, but why would the president of the United States wish her well? That really is the question,” Hostin said.
Host Joy Behar said she also believes Trump was “signaling something” to Maxwell with his remarks.
The ladies of ABC’s The View were not the only ones floating conspiracies about Trump’s true intentions with his remarks about Maxwell. CNN host Dana Bash also said the president may have been sending a message to Maxwell.
Trump said he had not “really been following” Maxwell’s case, but noted that he knew her when they lived in Palm Beach, Florida.
Maxwell was charged with conspiring with Epstein to recruit, groom, and sexually abuse underage girls, as well as perjury in depositions. She was denied bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.
