APALACHICOLA, Fla. (AP) — Wakulla and Franklin county leaders hope dozens of new artificial reefs being placed off their coasts will be good for both the environment and the economy. The Tallahassee Democrat (http://on.tdo.com/Sou3kS ) reports that workers plan to deploy the reef by crane about 10 miles off the coastline later this week.
The cone-shaped structures provide habitat for numerous species of deep-water fish and invertebrates, including sponges and coral. They will be placed in 60 feet of water along the coast of the two counties where the sea floor is mostly sand.
